ED Lifestyle 101: How P-Shot & Shockwave May Help You

Having occasional trouble obtaining or keeping an erection is completely normal. However, when the problem occurs repeatedly or is ongoing, it may be a sign of a treatable condition that you can and should seek help with.  Many people let shame keep them from enjoying a fulfilling sex life, but there’s no reason to make it harder on themselves (or softer)—not when there are solutions that can help.  So what is erectile dysfunction, and what options are available to treat the issue and unlock a satisfying sex life?

What Is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction, or impotence, refers to an inability to obtain an erection or maintain an erection firm enough for sex.

Sexual arousal is complex, incorporating several body systems, including the brain, hormones, nerves, muscles, blood vessels, and emotions. Erectile dysfunction can result from an issue in any of these systems.

Stress or mental health concerns can also exacerbate ED. Often, the cause is a combination of physical and psychological conditions.

What Medical Conditions Can Cause ED?

ED can be a symptom of a more serious medical condition. Some of the physical causes of ED may include:

  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Sleep disorders
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Peyronie’s disease
  • Parkinson’s disease

In addition, certain prescription medications, tobacco use, alcoholism, and other forms of substance abuse can cause or otherwise contribute to ED.

Treating ED

When ED results from another medical condition, resolving it starts with accurately diagnosing and treating the underlying cause.

When treating ED specifically, most patients try a prescription for oral medication. Most ED medications work by enhancing the body’s nitric oxide. Nitric oxide relaxes the penis muscles, increasing blood flow and allowing an erection to occur.

Newer treatments for ED offer a more long-term solution. Two groundbreaking treatments we offer at AIM are P-Shot injections and shockwave therapy.

The Challenges of Traditional ED Treatments

By the time Bob (not his real name) came to us at AIM, he had received an ED diagnosis over a year ago but had struggled for much longer. Years of infirm erections and too-fast ejaculations had placed a long-term strain on his relationship with his partner, and oral medications weren’t offering an adequate solution.

He had missed spontaneous, more organically occurring sex, and while his prescription did support a firm erection, it seemed to be losing its effectiveness. Finally, Bob was ready to try a new option with long-lasting benefits.

Bob came to AIM ready to learn about his options for treating ED, specifically the P-Shot or shockwave therapy. Through Bob’s comprehensive initial appointment, we identified some issues that could contribute to his ED. Then, we discussed his range of treatment options to determine the best solution for him. Since Bob’s ED fell into the moderate to severe category, he opted to combine the treatments to accelerate his results.

The two simultaneous treatments offered a synergistic effect, creating erections that were both harder and longer-lasting, as well as decreasing the need for recovery time between erections. Additionally, Bob experienced a small increase to his penis size over time and sensitivity, naturally boosting his libido, which had suffered due to frustration from his ongoing struggles with ED.

Now, Bob and his partner have a better sex life than ever before, and ED no longer serves as the libido-crushing elephant in their bedroom. While no treatment is a miracle cure, the team at AIM will work with you to find the best course of action, regardless of your medical concern.

What Is the P-Shot Treatment?

The Priapus Shot, or P-Shot, is a form of regenerative medicine that takes platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and injects it into the penile tissue to create better erections.

Your blood’s platelets are a vital component of healing. They contain growth factors that stimulate the reproduction of cells and tissue. When injected into the penile tissue, the high concentration of platelets found in PRP helps form new blood vessels and triggers the repair of damaged tissue

What to Expect from a P-Shot Treatment

The P-Shot injection process takes about an hour. First, we numb the treatment area and draw blood from your arm. Then we place your blood into a centrifuge to separate the red and white blood cells from the platelets and plasma, creating PRP. Finally, we inject the PRP into your penile tissue to foster healing.

After the procedure, we give you a vacuum erection device (VED), commonly known as a penile pump. You’ll need to use the device twice daily to help draw blood into the penis. Using the VED is quick and easy and significantly increases the procedure’s success rate.

Results and Aftercare

After your P-Shot treatment, you can resume most regular activities. However, we recommend waiting a few days before engaging in strenuous exercise or sexual intercourse.

While some men see immediate results from only one P-Shot treatment, others require a series of treatments to achieve maximum results. Your overall health and the longevity of your ED can help us determine the correct number of treatments for you.

P-Shot results can last up to 18 months before requiring subsequent treatments to maintain the benefits of your injections.

Benefits of the P-Shot

There are many reasons patients choose P-Shot treatment over other ED solutions. Some of the most significant benefits patients report are:

  • Improved stamina
  • Harder, longer-lasting erections
  • Stronger, more intense orgasms
  • Increased sensation and pleasure

We’ll customize your P-Shot therapy to address your unique condition.

What Is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy is also called low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (Li-ESWT). Doctors initially developed Li-ESWT to break up kidney stones.

The treatment uses high-frequency, low-intensity shock waves to trigger the body’s healing response. The therapy creates tiny injuries to the penile tissue, causing the body to react with its natural healing process.

As the body heals the treatment area, it forms new nerve tissue, increasing penis sensitivity. Additionally, shockwave therapy can break up micro plaque and scar tissue that narrow the blood vessels, increasing blood flow to the penis.

What to Expect from Shockwave Therapy

The entire shockwave therapy appointment takes about an hour. We ask patients to arrive 30 minutes before the procedure to apply a topical numbing cream to the treatment area. We can supply you with the cream for home application if you require follow-up treatments.

Once the area is sufficiently numb, we use a non-invasive wand to send an electrical current to the treatment area with gentle, low-level pulses. The vibrations create tension in the tissue, increasing circulation and promoting the dissolving of calcific deposits.

In addition, the treatment creates a “cavitation bubble,” or small, empty cavities that collapse to break down deposits or plaque embedded in the tissue. Finally, the procedure stimulates fibroblasts, which heal connective tissue.

The actual treatment takes about 30 minutes and can feel like small pulses against the skin. If you experience discomfort, we can adjust the application of the shockwave device to make the treatment more comfortable.

Results and Aftercare

After your shockwave therapy, you can resume everyday activities. Sexual intercourse after your treatment can increase blood flow to the area, so it’s recommended.

Most patients using shockwave therapy experience initial results within one to two treatments and achieve their desired results in six to twelve sessions.

Benefits of Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy offers significant benefits for those suffering from mild-to-moderate ED. Our patients who choose shockwave therapy report the following benefits:

  • Firmer erections
  • More satisfying sex
  • Heightened sensitivity
  • Few, if any, incidents of ED
  • Improved sexual endurance

Also, the benefits of shockwave therapy can last up to three years, making it one of the longest-lasting ED treatments available.
