What Exactly is PRP?

PRP Orthopedics, Male nurse drawing blood from male patient's left arm

Platelets are a core component of blood. These little packets contain concentrations of powerful growth factors.

Growth factors are named based on their unique properties and functions. Some of the growth factors are responsible for carrying out essential tasks like clotting and repairing damaged tissues.

During PRP therapy for pain, our experienced doctors will harvest a small sample of the patient’s blood. This blood is processed using advanced laboratory equipment that extracts and concentrates the platelets.

Once concentrated, the substance is then injected into the injured area(s) of the body in order to promote regrowth and healing.

Why Choose PRP Therapy?

If you or a loved one are struggling with an acute injury or chronic pain in a ligament, tendon, or muscle, you may feel that your treatment options are limited.

Traditional interventions often include oral medications that only mask the pain. The next step in the progression of treatment can include invasive surgical interventions that can be painful, expensive, leave you laid up in recovery for weeks, and may not, long-term, solve the underlying issue . Fortunately, PRP therapy injections may offer a better option.

The goal of PRP treatment is to address the underlying health problem and the root cause, not just to mask the symptoms. PRP therapy activates the body’s natural recovery capabilities in order to reduce the pain and encourage repair.

PRP therapy can be used to treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • Cartilage damage
  • Chronic tendon injuries
  • Ligament sprains
  • Meniscus tears
  • Osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, and shoulder
  • Plantar fasciitis

While most insurance plans do not cover regenerative treatments, at Atlanta Innovative Medicine, we provide financing options. These can be explained in your initial consultation.

Why Pros Trust PRP Therapy

Platelet-rich plasma therapy has started to gain notoriety because it has been used by top athletes in a variety of professional sports leagues.

Famous athletes such as Tiger Woods, Brooks Koepka and Kobe Bryant have used PRP therapy for joint and back pain. This treatment option allowed them to perform at their best while avoiding invasive surgeries or prolonged periods of downtime.

There have been several studies that have demonstrated the effectiveness of PRP therapy for treating muscle injuries. It has been shown to promote muscle recovery, reduce pain, eliminate swelling, and speed up the natural repairing process of the body.

Thanks to the professionals at premier PRP pain clinic, AIM, you can access the same treatment as some of the world’s highest paid athletes.

How Does PRP Therapy Work?

erectile dysfunction clinic, image of a technician holding a full vial above a centrifuge machine.

PRP involves an injection of growth factors from the patient’s own blood into an injured area. This promotes the formation of new tissues.

Your blood consists of solid cells, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets; which are suspended in a liquid called plasma.

The platelets contain dozens of growth factors which are proteins that play a vital role in the body’s natural recovery process. These growth factors run to the aid of damaged tissues in order to repair them.

To deliver the therapy, a small amount of blood is drawn from a patient and spun in a centrifuge, which separates the different components. The red blood cells and much of the plasma is drained away, leaving a high concentration of platelets and growth factors (i.e., PRP). This PRP is then injected into the damaged area of the body to stimulate the repair and recovery process.

Most Georgia PRP patients require a series of two or three injections spread out over several weeks and months. For those who are suffering from chronic, degenerative conditions, our team will recommend maintenance PRP therapy in regular intervals of three, six, or twelve months.

Because PRP stimulates the body’s natural healing processes, it is both fast-acting and long-lasting. You can expect benefits to set in within 4–6 weeks and to last 6 months or longer.

As a regenerative therapy, PRP enhances the body’s healing capacity by acting in three powerful ways to stimulate tissue growth.

Effectiveness of PRP

While the exact mechanism of PRP is still being studied, it is believed that the concentration of growth factors expedites the body’s recovery process.

The body sends platelets to the site of any soft tissue injury as part of its natural response. By injecting PRP into these injured areas, the repairing process can be intensified and accelerated.

The normal blood concentration of platelets is approximately 200,000 per microliter. The concentration of PRP is four to eight times that number. At AIM, we use super-concentrated PRP, and the number of platelets in the serum can be as much as 9.3 times the normal volume. This massive amount of platelets can stimulate new tissue growth and repair, thereby addressing joint pain at its source.

Why Choose PRP Therapy?

If you are dealing with an acute or chronic injury to a muscle, tendon, joint or ligament, most standard pain relief options will only mask the pain. The goal of PRP therapy for pain treatment is to target and repair the underlying problem, thus reducing pain naturally.

Muscle sprains, tears, and other soft-tissue injuries are common, especially among athletes. When conservative treatments and therapies aren’t working quickly or effectively enough, many patients choose PRP treatment to enhance the process of repair while decreasing their recovery time.

PRP Therapy for Chronic Knee Pain

Regenerative Medicine, Woman wearing an orange zip-up sweatshirt and rolled-up gray sweatpants stretching on the beach on one knee, left leg extended out with both hands on her left leg

The knee is a complex joint with many working parts that can become damaged or worn down over time.

Smooth, pain-free movement of the knee depends on cartilage, menisci, ligaments, tendons, and bones all working together in harmony.

Trauma from a fall or medical conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or bursitis can cause problems with the knee that result in chronic pain. Dealing with inflammation, tenderness and pain when you walk or stand can then become a challenging way of life.

Treatments to ease knee pain typically rely on rest and exercises to strengthen the muscle structures that provide support to the knee joint, or surgery. Some patients continue to experience chronic knee pain even after they’ve tried these treatments.

PRP knee injections are a minimally-invasive alternative and/or supplement to traditional therapies. The growing popularity of platelet-rich plasma treatments has made it easier to find PRP knee injections than just a few years ago.

What Are PRP Knee Injections?

A PRP knee injection treatment uses the patient’s own blood, which is drawn from the arm and placed inside a centrifuge. After the platelets are separated, they are extracted from the blood sample and injected into the knee.

Prior to the injection, you will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area. Fortunately, no general anesthesia is required because it is not a surgical procedure.

PRP therapy relies upon blood platelets that contain the essential elements that are necessary to accelerate the body’s natural healing process. Some patients feel relief after the first injection. However, most studies on PRP knee injections suggest that repeated treatments are necessary over the course of several months to yield the best results.

Unlike corticosteroid injections, which can harm tendons and ligaments over time, PRP injections can strengthen tissues and enhance the body’s ability to heal.

The knowledgeable AIM doctors at our PRP knee clinic will explain the entire process and answer any questions you may have before proceeding.

Considering PRP Knee Therapy?

A growing list of studies show support for the use of PRP for treating knee osteoarthritis pain and other disorders.

One study published by the Journal of Orthopedic Surgery and Research concluded that PRP injections were more effective in decreasing knee osteoarthritis pain than corticosteroid injections. This is good news for patients who are concerned about the side effects of repetitive corticosteroid injections.

Every medical treatment carries a risk of side effects. The side effects associated with PRP treatments are typically rare. They may include pain or infection in the injection site or skin discoloration. At AIM, every precaution is taken to eliminate the possibility of unwanted side effects.

Our PRP knee injection doctors will discuss any risks and potential benefits with you during your consultation.

PRP Treatment for Hair Loss

PRP Orthopedics, Middle aged man wearing a blue button down shirt with smile on his face runs his fingers of his left hand through his hair

You’ve heard about topical treatments, surgeries and hair tattooing.

You might have even tried some of these treatments to improve the look of your hairline, but were probably disappointed with the results.

PRP hair injections are a relatively new hair loss treatment that’s helping men and women regain the confidence they’ve lost because of thinning hair.

What Are PRP Treatments for Hair Loss?

Like all similar platelet-rich plasma treatments, PRP hair loss treatments begin by administering an anesthetic, then separating a sample of the patient’s blood in a centrifuge. Once the platelets are separated from the rest of the fluid, they are collected. After our doctors apply a local anesthetic, the platelets are injected into the scalp.

PRP injections for hair loss are still considered to be experimental, but clinical studies suggest the treatment may be effective for many patients who are experiencing hair thinning, hair loss or baldness.

During your consultation at our PRP hair loss clinic, our experienced doctors will explain whether you might be a candidate for PRP therapy and what kinds of improvements you should expect from your treatment.

Who Can Benefit from PRP Hair Injections?

Almost anyone who is looking for a natural hair loss treatment has the potential to benefit from a consultation with our PRP hair treatment doctors.

Plasma-rich injections may help if you are in one of the following groups:

  • Men and women who are 18 to 72 years old
  • Those whose hair loss is related to stress
  • Those with recent hair loss
  • Anyone with alopecia (including androgenic alopecia, a condition that affects roughly 80 million people in the U.S.)
  • Any person with thinning hair who is not yet completely bald

PRP hair injection treatment shows greater results for patients who still have functioning hair follicles, even if they are weak.

The PRP injections can thicken and strengthen existing hair and help to grow more hair in working follicles. If you are completely bald and have been for some time, PRP may not be right for you.

Consult with one of our knowledgeable PRP hair injections doctors for the most current information.

What Are the Side Effects of PRP Hair Treatment?

The side effects of any PRP treatment are typically mild, temporary and rare. However, every procedure comes with risks you need to consider.

Potential side effects from treatment include:

  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Scar tissue at the injection site
  • Scalp pain or irritation
  • Chance of injury to nerves or blood vessels

If you experience any of these problems, you should consult your PRP doctor right away.

FAQ

Here are a number of questions that our doctors and nurses frequently encounter during new patient consultations. While we are happy to answer these questions in detail during your phone or clinical appointment, we have composed a list of some of the most common inquiries about PRP therapy below.

PRP Orthopedics, Patient wearing black shirt consults with a doctor that is holding clipboard in his left hand and pen in his right hand

Multiple studies have examined outcomes for the use of PRP in treating musculoskeletal injuries. It has been shown to promote muscle recovery due to growth factors that are released from activated platelets. The treatment can be used to reduce pain, swelling, and the time it takes to return to playing sports.

Platelet-rich plasma therapy can help with a wide variety of injuries, including:

  • Cartilage damage
  • Chronic tendon injuries, including rotator cuffs
  • Degenerative changes in the spine
  • Ligament sprains
  • Meniscus tears
  • Osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, and shoulder
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Elbow Tendonitis
  1. For most people, PRP can be an effective alternative to surgery and medications. It’s typically chosen if the patient’s symptoms remain unresolved or physical therapy has not helped to stabilize the injured area and surgery is not appropriate or desired.

The procedure can typically be done in less than an hour at our clinic.

While PRP is a safe and non-invasive treatment option for most people, it is not for everyone. Make sure to let your doctor know if any of the following apply:

  • You have cancer that has not been in remission for at least 5 years
  • You have malignancies or blood-borne diseases
  • You have an active infection
  • You are taking Coumadin or other blood thinners
  • You have cerebral palsy or Parkinson’s disease

There may be other conditions that could influence your doctor’s decision to move forward with PRP or to seek alternative treatments.
For example, PRP injections are not typically recommended for the most severe cases of osteoarthritis or when diagnostic imaging has shown clear signs of structural damage.

Every patient’s needs are different. As a result, the exact length of your appointment may vary. However, the typical length of a PRP therapy appointment ranges from approximately 60 to 90 minutes.

The number of PRP injections you need will depend on the severity of your condition. Generally, patients who are suffering joint pain as the result of an acute injury will need two to three treatments of PRP at our clinic.

Once they have recovered, no maintenance PRP treatments are necessary to maintain the results.

However, patients who are struggling with chronic or degenerative conditions, such as those associated with aging, will likely need maintenance therapy over a period of time. For this population of patients, the medical team at our clinic recommend maintenance PRP injections in intervals of three, six, or twelve months.

At AIM, every patient receives a custom treatment plan that is tailored to address their unique needs.

Atlanta Innovative Medicine has helped many patients with our PRP therapy for joint pain. The exact experience of each of these patients varies based on their individual circumstances. However, most begin experiencing positive results from the treatment within three to eight weeks. Continued improvements are expected for up to one year following PRP therapy.

While platelet-rich plasma has been around for years, it has become increasingly more popular recently.

Part of this has to do with a large number of patients becoming more health-conscious in recent years. They are interested in addressing the root causes of their health problems, rather than just masking the pain with potentially harmful prescription drugs.

This increased health consciousness has made PRP therapy a go-to option for limiting the use of oral medications and avoiding invasive surgeries.

Another reason that PRP therapy has become more widely used is because of the extensive advancements that have been made in the medical field. Better technologies have made this treatment more accessible than ever before.

While PRP injections have become more common, it is important to understand that not all platelet-rich plasma treatments are the same. Some clinics may still rely on outdated harvesting and enrichment methods that typically do not produce significant results.

Our PRP clinic utilizes the very best harvesting and concentration methods available in order to create super-concentrated PRP.

We look forward to helping you start your journey to a life without joint pain today! Call our experienced staff at 770.232.6243 now to schedule your free consultation or to ask any questions you may have.
