PRP Hair Treatment: What Success Can You Expect?

Hair loss is an incredibly common issue, affecting millions of adults worldwide. If you’re one of the nearly 50% of women or 80% of men experiencing hair loss, PRP hair treatments might be the breakthrough you’ve been looking for.

PRP therapy for hair loss is a natural, minimally invasive answer to hair loss that doesn’t require a consistent long-term commitment.  At AIM, we’ve helped hundreds of patients and take pride in our clinic’s high success rate for effectively treating hair loss with PRP hair treatments. In this article, we’ll discuss PRP therapy for hair loss–specifically what it is, the research that backs it, and what you can expect regarding success rates and treatment time.

What is PRP?

PRP therapy, or platelet-rich plasma therapy, is a medical treatment that uses a concentration of platelets from the patient’s own blood to stimulate healing and tissue regeneration. These platelets contain growth factors that aid in clotting, repairing damaged tissues, and stimulating hair follicles.

In the context of hair loss, PRP therapy involves drawing a small amount of your blood, which is then processed to concentrate the platelets. This plasma is then injected into areas of thinning or receding hair where its growth factors signal hair follicles to promote regrowth. Additional growth factors in PRP also help to repair damaged blood vessels, improving blood circulation to the hair follicles. This enhanced blood flow ensures an adequate supply of oxygen and nutrients, promoting the continued health and strength of the hair follicles for noticeable, lasting results.

PRP for hair restoration typically requires multiple sessions for the best outcomes and is a cost-effective alternative to hair grafting. Treatment sessions take about an hour and are generally well tolerated, with the scalp numbed for comfort. Regarding platelet concentration, normal blood has approximately 200,000 platelets per microliter. At Atlanta Innovative Medicine, we utilize super-concentrated PRP, with platelet levels in the serum reaching as high as 9.3 times the normal volume. This significant concentration of platelets enhances the overall effectiveness of the treatment.

How Successful is PRP for Hair Growth? Let’s Look at the Numbers

While PRP therapy is often successful in treating injury and chronic pain, it has also shown remarkable effectiveness for hair loss. Recent research highlights the success of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy in treating various types of hair loss, including androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, and medication-induced hair loss. Numerous clinical trials have demonstrated significant improvements in hair volume, quality, and density among patients undergoing PRP treatment. For instance, one randomized, placebo-controlled study reported notable enhancements in hair quality for women with pattern hair loss, which were sustained throughout six months. Another study found an average increase of 33.6 hairs in targeted areas and a mean increase of 45.9 hairs per square centimeter in overall hair density after multiple PRP treatment cycles.

At Atlanta Innovative Medicine, our patients receiving PRP hair treatments have experienced benefits and success rates on par with, and in many instances exceeding, these findings. Furthermore, our tailored approach aligns with ongoing research advancements, and our team’s commitment to personalized care ensures that each patient receives the most effective treatment for their unique hair.

How Long Does PRP Hair Treatment Take to Show Results?

Typically, patients may start to see noticeable results from PRP hair treatment within two months, but the response to treatment can vary significantly from person to person. For many of our patients, visible hair growth is noticed shortly after the first session, with continued improvements observed over the course of treatment.

At AIM, we will personalize your treatment approach and schedule. We generally recommend one session every month for 3 to 5 months, but some patients may require fewer or more sessions to achieve optimal results. This tailored approach is an essential part of treatment, as different hair follicles respond differently to PRP therapy. We closely monitor your progress and adjust treatment as needed, targeting areas that show slower growth to ensure balanced and effective outcomes. Regular booster sessions are often recommended once or twice per year to maintain the results over time.

What are the Benefits of PRP for Hair Loss?

With many patients experiencing fast, sustainable results, PRP therapy has become an increasingly popular option for combatting hair loss. But what do our patients love about PRP hair treatment?

  • Safe, Natural Hair Growth: The growth factors in PRP work to energize hair follicles, promoting hair regeneration and encouraging natural growth. A bonus? PRP therapy uses your own blood, which minimizes the risk of allergic reactions or complications.
  • Nonsurgical and Quick: PRP therapy is not just effective, it’s also convenient. Being a nonsurgical, minimally invasive solution, each treatment session typically takes about an hour, making it a feasible option for patients with busy schedules.
  • Comfortable and Affordable: PRP is generally well-tolerated, with local numbing to ensure your comfort during the procedure. It’s also a more budget-friendly alternative compared to traditional hair grafting methods.
  • Personalized Treatment and Easy Maintenance: Each treatment is tailored to meet your specific needs, and unlike daily topical treatments, PRP allows for a more straightforward maintenance plan. After the initial sessions, occasional booster treatments help sustain your results without the hassle of daily applications.
