Treating ED with PRP: Study Highlights Importance of P-Shot®

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy has emerged as a promising treatment option for a variety of conditions, including erectile dysfunction (ED). As the use of PRP in ED treatment has expanded, so has the variability in methods used to administer it.

A recent study published in The Journal of Urology indicates that without the proper methodology, PRP may have low efficacy rates for treating ED, underscoring the importance of following today’s best in class procedure: the P-Shot® protocol—a very specific and carefully developed method for preparing and administering PRP to treat ED. The study, which did not employ the P-Shot® protocol, demonstrated that PRP injections were no more effective than placebo for treating ED.

In response to this study, Charles Runels, MD, who developed the P-Shot® (or Priapus Shot®), explains that “One of the legitimate criticisms of all of the review articles regarding PRP therapies in every field is that there is a significant variability in what people call PRP. The P-Shot® represents a very specific protocol in the methods of preparing PRP, activating PRP, and injecting the PRP—all of which differ significantly from what was done in Ledesma’s study and which could account for their lack of results.”

The method of treatment used in this study deviated from the P-Shot® protocol in several ways:

  • The method involved an injection technique that limited the amount of penile tissue exposed to treatment.
  • The centrifuge used to create the PRP concentrate is not on the FDA-approved list of devices. This technology is important as it is largely responsible for the number of platelets present in the PRP (and as a result, for the PRP’s regenerative capacity).
  • Only 5 cc of PRP was injected into the penile tissue, whereas the P-Shot® procedure involves 10 cc or more.
  • The PRP was not activated prior to injection, as it is with the P-Shot® protocol, resulting in limited growth factors.

When it comes to PRP for ED, not all procedures are equal.

When you compare the results of this study to that of the numerous studies proving the efficacy of the P-Shot, these procedural differences demonstrate the importance of using the proper methodology for treating ED with PRP. It is important for patients to seek out providers who are certified in this specific protocol.

Our clinic at Atlanta Innovative Medicine is proud to offer the clinically proven P-Shot® for treating erectile dysfunction. Our experienced providers have been specifically trained and certified to administer the P-Shot® procedure for optimal results.

In addition to administration protocols, other factors can impact the effectiveness of PRP treatment for ED, such as integration with other treatments like shockwave therapy

Shockwave therapy uses low-intensity sound waves to improve blood flow and stimulate tissue regeneration, and studies have shown that when combined with PRP, it can significantly improve the degree and duration of treatment effects.

PRP treatment for ED is an ongoing area of research in regenerative medicine; and as more research is conducted and protocols are refined, the effectiveness of PRP treatment will continue to improve. However, it is clear that the P-Shot® protocol delivers the most effective PRP treatment available for ED.
