Atlanta Innovative Medicine offers the latest regenerative medicine therapies for patients as part of each customized treatment plan.

Rather than simply masking one’s pain by suppressing symptoms with pain medications, regenerative therapies offer a different approach.

We use the term “regenerative” to refer to procedures that are able to repair and restore tissues in the body that are damaged. The procedures at our clinic address the actual root cause of the damage, rather than simply suppressing pain with a “band aid” approach.

While opioid medications have their place for pain relief, they have significant risks such as tolerance, addiction or constipation. Steroid injections don’t heal anything, and may actually lead to joint degradation. That is the opposite effect of what we’re working to achieve.

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy

Regenerative Medicine, Medical practitioner injecting needle into patient's knee

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) has become extremely popular over the past decade due to its safety, effectiveness and simplicity.

It involves a blood draw from the patient him/herself of one to two test tubes. The patient’s blood is then spun rapidly in a centrifuge machine, with the goal being to concentrate the elements of the blood that are critical in the healing process.

Those components are:

  • Platelets – the system at AIM achieves an incredible concentration of platelets that is over 8 times what is seen when the blood is first taken. Platelets contain over 30 bioactive proteins that are extremely helpful in facilitating tissue repair.
  • Growth Factors – these are proteins similar to “construction foremen”. There are a dozen of them present in PRP, which participate in such functions as directing new blood vessel formation, protein synthesis, and calling in your own stem cells to participate in tissue repair.
  • White Blood Cells – WBC’s are helpful as a component of PRP, as they stimulate inflammation. As the first phase of healing, inflammation promotes the healing cascade to start. The second phase of healing is repair.

PRP therapy at Atlanta Innovative Medicine takes, on average, about one hour from start to finish. The procedure works well for the following issues (According to Journal of Arthroscopy, May 2019; not a complete list.)

  • Joint and Spine Arthritis
  • Sports Injuries
  • Rotator Cuff Tendonitis
  • Tennis/Golfer’s Elbow
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Jumper’s Knee

You may have heard of stem cells, platelet-rich plasma and other injection therapies. But do you know the difference between the therapies being offered by different practitioners?

For the knee in particular, PRP therapy has been amazing. Results show in many studies that pain relief continues for six to 12 months. Patients may need a series of three injections, as studies show that regimen to typically be most effective at pain relief and helping patients avoid the need for potentially risky surgery (Journal of Ortho Surgery & Research 2017).

Autologous Adipose Stem Cell Therapy

Autologous adipose stem cell therapy at our treatment center involves taking fat tissue from the patient himself/herself.

The term “auto” means self and adipose is the medical term for fat. The adipose is obtained from either the patient’s abdomen or flank in an outpatient procedure that does not require general anesthesia. Approximately 60cc’s of fat is obtained, so a patient does get the benefit of a small liposuction too.

One’s adipose tissue maintains an incredibly high number of active stem cells, growth factors, and other regenerative elements. Since it’s the patient’s own tissue, there is no chance of rejection and discomfort is minimal afterwards. The adipose tissue is immediately processed in an FDA compliant manner, and then administered to the painful area.

Results from autologous adipose stem cell therapy for joint pain have been stellar. (The Physician and Sports Medicine 2020) Patients typically receive amazing pain relief for over one year and often up to 3-4 years. At Atlanta Innovative Medicine, Board Certified physicians who have specialized training in the adipose procedure treat patients. If any side effects are seen, they have been minor to date.

Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that involves injection of a natural irritant into painful soft tissue or an injured joint.

The irritant, which can be something as simple as dextrose, typically sparks an inflammatory reaction.

With inflammation being the first phase of healing, this sparks up the healing cascade. It can compel a healing response for ligaments and tendons that have become lax in their support of the joints and spine. For this reason, it is referred to as a regenerative procedure.

Doctors at Atlanta Innovative Medicine mainly incorporate prolotherapy to treat injured joints and ligaments. This may also include being effective for back pain, neck pain, hip/knee pain and also shoulders too. At times, prolotherapy may be used in conjunction with ozone and/or PRP therapy to enhance the healing response.

The treatment involves several injections at one setting, and repeat treatments over a period of three to six months. Not everyone is a candidate. Since the Atlanta Innovative medicine doctors customize each treatment regimen for the patient’s unique condition, it may be part of what’s recommended or not be indicated.

The positive results from prolotherapy are typically long lasting and may be permanent. Side effects are very rare, with the worst being maybe an infection. Studies looking at the effectiveness of prolotherapy have been exciting, but unfortunately have not included many patients. Up to 90 patients have been evaluated, with the results being fantastic and safe (Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine).

Prolozone

Prolozone is an injection technique combination that utilizes Ozone, nutrition, homeopathic solutions and highly-energized oxygen to repair and restore joint function.

The system was created and pioneered by Dr. Frank Shallenberger, who while in Germany, learned about the benefits that Ozone provides.

The Prolozone Technique

The Prolozone technique is utilized by the Atlanta Innovative Medicine regenerative medicine doctors for any forms of musculoskeletal or joint dysfunction, which can include neck pain, back pain, rotator cuff injuries, degenerative knee and hip pain, spinal disc degeneration, as well as shoulder, wrist, ankle and elbow pain. It is also ideal for many soft tissue injuries. Prolozone is different from pure steroid injections as it helps the mitochondria of cells to “wake up”, thus resulting in the inducement of repair to the injured or damaged tissue instead of only masking the pain. Since it effectively corrects the disorder’s pathology, there is a high probability that the patient suffering from chronic pain becomes pain free.

About Prolozone

Prolozone comes from the Latin word “proli” which implies to rebuild or regenerate, and the word “ozone”. The most active oxygen form in the universe, ozone (O3) is defined as tri-atomic. This means it is highly-energized oxygen combined with three oxygen molecules. The oxygen we breathe has only two oxygen molecules (O2). Using the highly-energized oxygen, Prolozone stimulates regeneration of injured and damaged tissue, ligaments, tendons and joints. In some cases, this treatment can result in the permanent repair of the injury and an end to chronic pain.

Circulation is the main reason why certain injuries will heal over time and others will not. Damaged areas of the body can only regenerative and repair if they receive proper flow of blood which can provide oxygen, minerals and vitamins. Of these three, oxygen is by far the most vital. Oxygen in small amounts causes lactic acid to accumulate, thus inducing pain.

Prolozone is effective because of three main factors:

1. An injection into the injured or damaged area with a homeopathic anti-inflammatory medication to reduce swelling and increase circulation.

2. To initiate essential repair and regeneration, an Anesthetic, Dextrose, Bicarbonate, B vitamins and minerals are incorporated into the injection solution.

3. Ozone, a highly-energized oxygen, is then dispersed into the target area.

Ozone and Restoration of Cellular Activity

The Ozone produces what are referred to as “peroxides” in the cell. “Ozonides” are what Dr. Shallenberger calls these and they are what “wake up” the mitochondria to assist in restoration of cellular activity. Tissues can then repair and regenerate while circulation is restored to the area. Each patient will have their own response to this type of treatment, however, many patients will require 3-5 treatments to achieve pain relief and joint function.

Prolozone is Effective with Most Types of Pain

Prolozone treatment at our regenerative medicine therapy center is effective on most types of pain issues, including: low back pain, neck pain, headaches, whiplash, degenerated or herniated discs, carpal tunnel, plantar fasciitis, torn tendons, heel spurs, TMJ syndrome, sciatica, tennis elbow, neuromas, knee injuries, rotator cuff tears and nearly any sports injury.

Prolozone and Cartilage Regeneration

Prolozone treatment can cause cartilage regeneration and is even beneficial for osteoarthritis cases of the hip or knee that are very severe. It occurs frequently where a patient has been told they require a knee or hip replacement in order to experience significant relief, and then avoids the need for this type of surgical intervention. Prolozone’s amazing result is twofold: one, it can cause pain relief but the other is that it can impact damaged tissues with lasting correction.
