What Is Prolotherapy?

The term “Prolotherapy” is short for “proliferation therapy.”

This type of therapy is a non-surgical treatment that has been around for about 60 years, but it is only now gaining the recognition it deserves for its ability to offer relief from chronic pain.

This therapy can be an especially useful treatment option for people who have:
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Joint pain
  • Arthritis
  • Shoulder pain
  • Tendinitis
  • Whiplash
  • Knee pain
  • Hip pain

People with chronic conditions like degenerative disc disease may also find pain relief from this therapy.

Prolotherapy treatment involves the injection of a mild irritant. This irritant causes inflammation in injured tissues, which stimulates your body’s natural healing process.

When you receive an injury, your body produces more growth factors to help speed up the healing process. In most cases, these growth factors do their jobs well. But in some instances, inflammation can prevent nutrients and even oxygen from reaching the injury site.

Studies show that locations in the body with high levels of blood flow can heal better and more rapidly than those that receive less blood circulation.

Some parts of the body, like ligaments, tendons, and cartilage, have poor levels of circulation even when they are healthy. An injury that leads to inflammation will only make it worse.

Poor circulation after an injury can lead to a chronic condition because the body’s healing response is not fully functioning at the location of the wound.

With the injection of a natural irritant, such as sugar, the prolotherapy procedure targets the injured site and jump-starts your immune system’s healing response. Your immune system reacts against the irritant as if it were an injury. It attempts to heal the damaged tissue, bringing growth factors and increasing blood flow to the area.

Because of this response, your body can start strengthening and repairing the damaged ligaments in the affected joint. At the site of the prolotherapy injection, the injury will help tighten the tissues. Pain can begin to diminish as its root cause gets the necessary healing and the joint gets the support it needs to function at its best.

Who Are Good Candidates for Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy, Old man with white hair and facial hair, wearing a white tshirt and blue pajama pants sits on the edge of the bed grabbing his lower back with his right hand

The best candidates for prolotherapy are those who have a joint injury, lower back pain, or neck pain.

At our prolotherapy clinic, we often provide prolotherapy injections in the ligaments in the back to treat chronic back pain. The most common locations for these injections are in the lower back ligaments and the sacroiliac joint.

We also offer this treatment for those who suffer from neck pain and cervical instability. Prolotherapy promotes tissue growth and allows blood flow to reach the area so that the injury causing the pain can receive the oxygen and nutrients it needs to start healing. It can help increase flexibility while also diminishing pain.

Those who have serious medical conditions like septic arthritis, an abscess in the area, a fracture, or gout might not be good candidates for prolotherapy. If that is the case, we can suggest other treatment options or refer you to another provider.

Benefits of Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure. It can be a good solution if you do not want to go through surgery or cannot do so because of other health conditions.

You don’t have to worry about a long recovery time, and you also do not have to worry about the expense of a hospital stay.

When we administer prolotherapy injections, the injections include a natural irritant that carefully causes inflammation so that your body can respond naturally. You don’t have to deal with pain medications that can have side effects or have the risk of dependence.

Prolotherapy sessions are also quick, often lasting about 30 minutes. If you lead a busy life, you may not be able to get time off to recover from surgery—but you can still make time for a prolotherapy procedure.

After prolotherapy injections, your tendons and ligaments that offer support to the joints in the affected area can grow stronger. This effect reduces the pressure on the bones of the joint and can increase the joint’s range of motion, decreasing or even eliminating pain.

Prolotherapy is also a helpful treatment option for people who have worn-down joints that cause pain, since it can help stimulate tissue repair in damaged tissue. It can be helpful for lower back pain that comes from degenerative disc disease for the same reason.

A prolotherapy treatment should have no significant side effects.  And because we use ultrasound-guided imaging, we help ensure targeted treatments get right to the cause of the pain you feel.

What to Expect from the Prolotherapy Procedure

Prolotherapy, Woman sitting on a gray couch wearing an open blue long sleeve shirt, white undershirt and jeans consults with a medical practitioner

The first step is to schedule a consultation with us so we can see if this is the right treatment for your unique situation.

We will get your full medical history during this consultation, as well as a list of any medications you take. Tell us as much as you can about the injury and its progression.

On the day of the procedure, our prolotherapy specialists will clean the area of the injection and use ultrasound guidance to find the optimal location to target. Ultrasound guidance allows us to see the needle in real time as it enters the body. We then inject the solution. The entire treatment usually takes only 30-60 minutes.

We recommend you avoid strenuous activity for the next few hours and also avoid anti-inflammatory medications; these medications can interfere with the inflammatory response that you are seeking from the procedure.

During your consultation, we will decide how many treatment sessions you may need. The length of your treatment will depend on the severity of the damage and the pain you feel. Most patients need between three and five treatment sessions to get the full results.
